Communication RE: Boston Marathon on Behalf of Anna Maria Chávez, National CEO

From: Anna Maria Chávez, National CEO
Date: April 16, 2013
Subject: Boston Marathon
Yesterday, our nation watched in horror as
innocent Americans and athletes from around the world were victimized by the
bombs that exploded during the Boston Marathon.

The Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts had
a team of runners participating in the Marathon, made up of volunteers who were
running to raise money for our Movement. I am very happy to report that
all of our runners and council staff are accounted for and unharmed. It
is important that we remember however, that among the inured are likely to be
women and men with a connection to our Movement; who themselves were Girl
Scouts, or whose daughters, sisters, mothers, or friends were involved in Girl
Scouting at one time in their lives.
The Girl Scout family was attacked yesterday,
because the American family was attacked yesterday, and the two are
inextricably linked together. For most of us, this kind of attack on our
country gives rise to the palpable feelings of shock, hurt, and remorse carry
with them shades of that terrible September morning twelve years ago. But
we must remember that courage trumps fear every time; that our Movement is
stronger when we turn towards one another for comfort and strength, and when we
remember that for all the damage that a cowardly bomb can inflict, it can never
break our spirit, or our will.

Our entire Movement mourns with America
today. We mourn for the precious lives that were lost, and send our love
and support to the families of those injured in this horrible act. We
send our thoughts, our prayers, and our love to our sisters and brothers in the
Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts, and we resolve to rededicate ourselves to
the core values of our Movement: to be courageous and strong in the face of
violence, considerate and caring in the wake of tragedy, and to be a sister to
every Girl Scout, in this difficult time of need.

God
bless you all on this sad and difficult day.

Girl Scouts - Diamonds of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas is excited to share with you all that our council has been selected as one of a very few councils in the nation to participate in the unveiling ceremony of the Girl Scouts of the USA Centennial Commemorative Coin. CEO, Denise Stewart, and 2012 Gold recipient, Stephanie Westberg, of Arkadelphia, AR, will travel to Washington, D.C., to represent the Diamonds Council during this historic unveiling ceremony.
The Diamonds Council is honored to have been selected to attend this very special, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and we are looking forward to sharing photos and information about the festivities after Denise and Stephanie embark on this wonderful journey.
The Girl Scouts of the USA Centennial Commemorative Coin Act, signed into law in 2009, authorized the minting of up to 350,000 silver dollar coins in commemoration of the yearlong celebration of our 100th anniversary. On September 22, 2012, Girl Scouts of the USA unveiled the design of the coin at the Gala 100th Anniversary Experience Exhibition Preview and Dinner Under the Stars, hosted by Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas, with Connie L. Lindsey, our National President, and Anna Maria Chávez, our CEO.The coin will be available for sale starting February 28, 2013 noon EST. A surcharge from the sale of each coin is authorized to be paid to Girl Scouts of the USA's national program development and delivery, which helps girls grow into their best selves. And the coolest part? This is the first time the United States Mint has produced a commemorative coin dedicated to a girls' organization!

FAQs
Q: How many of the coins will be made?
A: The United States Mint will produce a maximum of 350,000 across all product options. The silver dollar coins will be issued in both uncirculated and proof qualities and are legal tender.
Q: What's the difference between the uncirculated and proof qualities?
A: Proof quality commemorative coins are made from highly polished planchets (coin blanks) and dies and are struck more than once to accent the design. Proof coins receive the highest quality strike possible and can be distinguished by their mirrored background and frosted foreground. Uncirculated quality commemorative coins are manufactured using the same process as circulating coins but with quality enhancements such as high coining force and early strikes from dies. To learn more about commemorative coins, visit the United States Mint's program information pages.
Q: How much will the coins be sold for?
A: The price of the coin will be $55.95 for uncirculated and $59.95 for proof. Orders received by 5 p.m. March 29, 2013 will take advantage of introductory pricing at $54.95 for proof quality and $50.95 for uncirculated quality. Shipping is $4.95 per order.
Q: Can the coins be sold in Girl Scout council shops?
A: Yes, councils will be able to order coins directly from the United States Mint.
Q: Will Girl Scouts of the USA be selling coins?
A: Yes, GSUSA will sell a limited quantity in our shop and online.
Q: How do I purchase a coin from the United States Mint?
A: On February 28, 2013 noon EST, you can either call 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468) or order online. Feel free to request a brochure with an order card directly from the United States Mint, by calling the above phone number.
Q: Will Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) benefit from the sale of these coins?
A: GSUSA is authorized to receive a surcharge of $10 per coin sold after the United States Mint has recouped all of their costs and has verified that GSUSA has recorded matching funds equal to the surcharges GSUSA is to receive from the United States Mint. Per the legislation passed by the Congress authorizing the coin, surcharges received by GSUSA are to be used for Girl Scout program development and delivery. Plans for specific use of the surcharges will be discussed as part of FY2014 planning and budgeting.

Dear
Girl Scout Family,
The
mission of Girl Scouting is to build girls of courage, confidence and
character, who make the world a better place.
As we celebrate 100 years of rich history, and look ahead to the next
100 years of providing the premier leadership experience for girls, we aim to
stay true to our values – the cornerstones of leadership, sisterhood, and
inclusion.

Visibility
of Girl Scouts increases each year during the Cookie Program – which began
January 14th for the Diamonds Council. We have received a great deal of positive
media coverage from local markets across our council’s 79 county coverage
area. But, as many of you have seen,
there have been some recent articles circulating through national and social
media regarding the Girl Scout organization.
Several of these articles contain false information, are one-sided and
do not accurately represent local councils.

As
such, the Diamonds Council wants to assure parents, volunteers, community
partners and all the friends of Girl Scouting that we do not have any
partnership or collaboration with Planned Parenthood, nor do we provide any
financial support to this organization.
We believe that health and sexuality are private matters for girls and
their families.

In
some areas, Girl Scout Troops or groups may offer information to girls on
reproductive health. In all instances,
these topics are discussed from an informative rather than advocative, point of
view, and the parent or guardian of each girl is notified in advance. Some Troops may make girls and their families
aware of the information and resources available to them on such matters.

Girl
Scouts – Diamonds of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas does not take a position on
abortion or birth control, nor do we endorse or provide funding to those
organizations that advocate on these issues.
It is also important to note that funds from the Cookie Program stay
local and benefit Troops and Service Units in the Diamonds Council by providing
programs for our girl members and training/development for our volunteers. A more complete breakdown of how cookie
proceeds are used in our council can be found on our website at http://www.girlscoutsdiamonds.org/CookiesMore.aspx.

We are sharing this information with
you so that you may know what Girl Scouts – Diamonds
of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas stands for, and to make you aware of the
articles currently circulating so that you can be adequately prepared should
you
face
any questions from others. Please feel
free to contact us if you have any questions
or concerns.
Sincerely,
Denise Stewart Barbara Bethell

A Message from Anna Maria Chavez, GSUSA CEO, Regarding the Tragedy in Connecticut

Dear Girl Scouts,
I write to all of you with a heavy heart. Indeed, words cannot express the sorrow I feel over the loss of life as a result of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. I, like everyone across the country and around the world, was shocked by the terrible tragedy and have grieved for the children and educators who lost their lives, and for the entire Newtown community.
On Sunday, I learned that eight of the twelve girls who died were Girl Scouts and that two Girl Scout families lost sons. The girls were Girl Scout Daisies who wore their uniforms proudly. The loss of any child brings with it an especially hollowing pain; to know that all of us in our Movement shared with those girls a love of Girl Scouting makes it all the more personal - and heartbreaking. Yet I know that all of us stand with our sisters at Girl Scouts of Connecticut as they endure with courage and strength this unspeakable tragedy, and I am heartened by the fact that we are developing girls who will lead our society to solutions and approaches that will prevent such tragedies in the decades ahead.
So we forge ahead, now more than ever committed to our mission of serving girls, and we do so even as we mourn this devastating and unfathomable loss. May those who perished and their families always remain in our thoughts and prayers, especially as we gather with our own families during this holiday season.
Sincerely,
Anna Maria Chavez
Chief Executive Officer
Girl Scouts of the USA
Girl Scouts - Diamonds of AR, OK, & TX echoes the sentiments of our National CEO, Anna Maria Chavez. Many heartfelt thoughts and prayers to all impacted by this tragedy.
Girl Scouts of Connecticut is planning a memorial service with the Newtown Service Unit in mid-January. At that time, they will be presenting thoughts, prayers, and well-wishes on trefoil art. If you or any of your troops would like to participate, please send these trefoils to the Hartford Service Center, c/o Trefoil Project, 340 Washington St. Hartford, CT 06106.

Healthy Media Commission Report

On
November 13, Anna Maria Chávez, CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA, and the Healthy
Media Commission released The Report and Recommendations of the Healthy
Media Commission for Positive Images of Women and Girls at the Geena Davis
Institute’s Third Symposium on Gender in Media in Los Angeles, California. This
report outlines recommendations that support a more positive and gender-neutral
media environment for women and promotes the healthy development of a girl’s
social, emotional, and physical well-being. Girl Scouts of Greater Los
Angeles CEO Lise Luttgens and several of her girls will participate in the
launch event.

Recognizing
the need for gender balance and positive portrayals of women and girls in the
media, Girl Scouts of the USA—along with the National Association of
Broadcasters, the National Cable & Telecommunications Association, the
Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, and the Creative Coalition—hosted the
Healthy Media for Youth Summit at the U.S. Capitol in October of
2010. At the summit, a cross-section of stakeholders gathered to explore
this subject and chart a course to promote healthy media for the benefit of all
young people. Participants at the summit recommended that a commission be
formed to more deeply explore these issues, identify emerging and best
practices, and create a sense of shared obligation and commitment to promoting
gender balance and positive portrayals of women and girls. The Healthy Media
Commission, which grew from an idea proposed at the summit, comprises more than
fifty leaders from the media industry, academia, youth-serving communities, and
the creative community. Girl Scouts of the USA has been a leader in the work of
the Healthy Media Commission and the development of The Report and
Recommendations of the Healthy Media Commission for Positive Images of Women
and Girls.

The
Healthy Media report is unique and innovative because it provides a detailed
blueprint of recommendations and strategies for four different categories of
stakeholders who impact the media culture, from the media creators themselves
to parents, educators, and youth. The belief is that each player has an equal
role and responsibility in facilitating change. For each category,
recommendations are organized and tailored to empower individuals with the
ability to LEARN and to be aware of the depiction of women and girls in the
media, to CHOOSE media that uphold high standards, and to EDUCATE others on the
importance of the issue. This report is the crucial first step in creating a
more positive media environment for women and girls. It identifies emerging best
practices, and establishes a climate for change. To access the report and learn
more about how you can make a difference, visit www.Girlscouts.org/HealthyMedia.

TRAHC & Diamonds Partner for 100th Display

Throughout the year, Girl Scouts – Diamonds of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas has been celebrating the 100th anniversary in a variety of ways. This spring, Girl Scouts set up displays in museums all across the council as a way to formally kick-off Girl Scout Week and celebrate the centennial. Over the summer, programs and encampments offered vintage scouting opportunities to girls at all levels, and at the start of the new Girl Scout year, plans were already underway to keep the 100th going through the end of 2012 with the Oral History Project, Founder’s Day celebrations, and much more.
Now, as we are approaching the end of the year, Girl Scouts – Diamonds is excited to collaborate with The Texarkana Regional Arts and Humanities Council to set up a display honoring the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scout Movement.
The display will be formally unveiled on Thursday, November 15, 2012 at a reception from 3:00 – 6:00 pm at TRAHC, located at 321 West 4th Street in Texarkana, TX, and will remain up through the end of the year. Everyone is encouraged to visit the display and learn more about Girl Scouting through the years, and take a look back into previous decades of the Scouting Movement through educational pieces, historical artifacts and Girl Scout memorabilia.
In addition to the museum exhibition, local Girl Scouts were invited to participate in TRAHC’s Art Wall Project. Girls and leaders participated in art classes led by Ms. Kay Thomas, TRAHC’s ArtsSmart Artist Consultant, through the ArtsSmart Institute. Ms. Thomas worked with the participants to create works of art that communicated the "Whole Role of Scouting," in addition to the common concepts of Scouting, such as cookies and camping. Participants’ ideas were re-created on construction paper and then transformed into art panels that were painted by the original artists and helpers. The panels will be on display on the Art Wall at TRAHC and many of the construction paper art pieces will be displayed in the basement gallery.
For additional information about the Texarkana Regional Arts and Humanities Council, or to learn more about the Girl Scout display, or the Art Wall Project, please visit www.trahc.org.

Girl Scouts - Diamonds of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas has officially began the Fall Product Program. As many of you know, our council uses Ashdon Farms to supply the product for the Fall Product Program.
Ashdon Farms products are not impacted by the current ongoing recall of peanut butter, nut butters, and related items currently being conducted in connection with product from Sunland, Inc.
As you may be aware, there is a growing number of product recalls associated with peanut butter and other nut butters produced by Sunland, Inc., including a large number of products that used nut butters provided by Sunland as ingredients. Ashdon Farms does not use Sunland as a supplier and therefore has no involvement in the recall.
If you have questions regarding the council's Fall Product Program, please feel free to contact us at 800-632-6894. Thank you!

International Day of the Girl

International
Day of the Girl is more than just a day. It is a movement to speak out against
gender bias and advocate for girls’ rights everywhere. The United Nations
General Assembly passed a resolution marking October 11 as the International
Day of the Girl. 10.11.12 is bigger than one issue, one organization, or
even one country.

The
Day of the Girl is about highlighting, celebrating, discussing, and advancing
girls lives and opportunities across the globe. When girls come together to
talk about what really matters to us, we can teach other people–grownups, boys,
and girls all across the world–a new way of thinking about issues like gender
stereotypes, discrimination, and opportunity.
Get the girls together in your troop and get a
city proclamation. This official declaration provides an opportunity for you to
support girls everywhere, and speak out against the stereotypes, obstacles and
problems girls still face. It means asking your Mayor or Councilmember to
declare 10.11.12 as the Day of the Girl!

DEADLINE EXTENDED! Our Journey to the Ballot Box

We are excited to say that we have a great opportunity
coming soon that will help Brownie through Ambassador girls earn
parts of the citizen badge. Please take a second to look at the attached
flyer regarding the council program “Our Journey to the Ballot Box.”

The 19th Amendment, which granted women the right
to vote, will be on display at the Clinton Presidential Library for only a few
days in October. With this being an election year, and the 100th
year of Girl Scouting, what better time to educate yourselves, your girls and
your communities about the importance of voting, and the struggle that many
women went through to make the right for women to vote a reality?
An additional exciting part of this announcement is that we
have an opportunity for Cadettes and up to help plan and carryout this girl-led
event in conjunction with the Clinton Presidential Library and council staff.

Save the Date:

    October 20th, 10am-2pm, Clinton Presidential
Library, Little Rock, AR is the date of the actual program “Our Journey to the
Ballot Box” that is open to Brownies-Ambassadors. Please note that this
is the same date as the Race for the Cure, but the race participants will be
finished before the start time of the program, so please consider doing both if
you already had the race on your calendar to do with family or your troops.

Register by October 10, 2012!

The Girl Scouts of the USA has partnered with the U. S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and joined the Stop.Think.Connect. Campaign’s National Network.
The Stop.Think.Connect. Campaign is a national public awareness effort among government, industry, and non-profits designed to guide the nation to a higher level of Internet security by educating and empowering the American public to be more vigilant about practicing safe online habits.
The campaign will provide Girl Scouts with tools and resources to help raise awareness among kids, teens and young adults about emerging online threats and the importance of cybersecurity. This partnership builds on the campaign’s efforts to highlight curriculum resources available to communities as well as to promote cyber security awareness to millions of girls engaged in Girl Scouting.
Through this relationship, the Girl Scouts of the USA will advocate and promote cybersecurity awareness across the country. Visit the DHS Stop.Think.Connect. Campaign Materials and Toolkit for information to share with adults and girls to educate them on the importance of staying safe online.

Linda Bragg Awarded Highest Adult Girl Scout Honor

On July 21, 2012, a Northwest Arkansas woman
received the highest award that adult Girl Scouts can earn – the Thanks Badge
II. Linda Bragg, of Lowell, was honored
at the Girl Scouts – Diamonds of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas’ Annual Meeting
Luncheon, held at the Holiday Inn – Airport, in Little Rock.
Thanks Badge II recipients are an elite group of Girl
Scouts. As the highest award that adult
Girl Scouts can earn, the Thanks Badge II honors a previous Thanks Badge award
recipient who has continued to provide exemplary service in a leadership role,
resulting in a measurable impact on the Girl Scout Movement. This award is recognized at the national
level by Girl Scouts of the USA and is awarded at the Council level.
Linda
comes from a family that genuinely believes in service to their country and
community. Her Girl Scout roots run very
deep, beginning as a child in Saline County and following her into adulthood in
Northwest Arkansas. Growing up, Linda’s
mother and father instilled in her the wholesomeness of Scouting. Linda has served in various capacities as an
adult in Girl Scouting, and believes that leading her daughters through Girl
Scouts was instrumental in exposing countless girls to Girl Scout opportunities
and experiences. One of Linda’s
nominators for this prestigious award stated, “Linda is the lifetime volunteer
that I aspire to be.” Those in the
Diamonds Council know that Linda’s service on the Board of Directors has been
invaluable in moving Girl Scouting into the second century, while preserving
its rich past. She is a forward-thinker
who values traditions and looks ahead to the future.

In November, the United States will make the most important choice it makes every four years. Voters will head to the polls to choose our president!
We invite you to get involved and let us know who YOU want to get you THERE! Make a PSA that sends this message to the candidates competing for the White House: With the right support for girls today, there will be a stronger generation of female leaders to help make the world a better place tomorrow! When girls succeed, so does society!
Join us in thinking ahead to the election of the President of the United States. What if, come November, we find the media covering stories about what girls think the President needs to do to "get girls there?" It's possible but first we need to involve girls.
