The Fundamental "5"

The Fundamental "5" provides an overview of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, including the Girl Scout Mission, Council Goals, program processes and resources that support the volunteer's success. These five classes are designed to introduce you to the basics of Girl Scouts so you feel comfortable in your volunteer role. Leaders and Co-Leaders must complete the Fundamental "5" within 6 weeks of registration.

You must make an 80% or better for the online courses. If you score below 80%, please review the required materials and retake the online exam.

2. Volunteer Essentials

This resource offers information about Girl Scouts as a movement and a tradition, discusses the GSLE and Journeys, and highlights other program offerings. It also shares information about Council policies and procedures, healthy development in girls, instructs volunteers in how to keep girls safe, gives information on taking trips and hosting events, and tells volunteers how to help manage group finances, including details on Girl Scout Cookie sales.

Safety Activity Checkpoints discuss steps to take in advance of troop activity.

Volunteer Essentials Exam

3 Out and About Exam

Out and About prepares you for troop travel (field trips with no overnight). This exam will use the Volunteer Essentials and Safety Activity Checkpoints.

New Leader Fundamentals

This face-to-face class is designed to help new leaders feel comfortable beginning a new troop. It covers troop start-up, finances, parent involvement, and helpful tips to develop your troop.

5. Our Girl Scout Journey

Volunteers will learn how to utilize the National Portfolio for girls. This class will teach how to use the Journeys book and Girl's Guide to Girl Scouting together for the total leadership experience.
